Positive Life - Life Insurance for those with HIV


Overview

Pulse has launched Positive Life in February 2017, as a straightforward solution for anyone with HIV who is otherwise healthy.

It is still not easy to find life insurance if you are HIV positive and do not want to complete long questionnaires and attend for a medical.  

Pulse offer two solutions: our standard questionnaire is needed if you have any other conditions that may affect your health.  

Alternatively, if you are otherwise healthy then our Positive Life cover may be suitable.

 

How does Positive Life work?

Positive Life Cover is available on a 10-year term life basis with a fixed sum assured of £50,000 for non-smokers or £25,000 for anyone who has used nicotine products in the last 12 months.  

Insureds have a simple proposal form to complete confirming that there are no other current health issues to consider and that they meet the basic eligibility requirements.

Medicals or Doctors’ reports are not required.

Cover is on a 10-year term life basis with a fixed sum assured of £50,000 for non-smokers or £25,000 for anyone who has used nicotine products in the last 12 months.  

Cover is just £30 per month for anyone under 40 and you can apply today.

 

Why Positive Life? 

Torquil McLusky, Pulse’s Managing Director said, "We are really excited to be launching this product. The advances in treatment for HIV and viral conditions in the past few years have been staggering and insurers do seem to have lagged behind in reacting to that. Last year the approval by the Courts to the funding of Prep (the pre-exposure prophylaxis) was an important milestone. But science is moving faster than attitudes; hopefully Positive Life is a good first step in offering people with HIV the choice of simple life cover without the need for a medical.”

 

Cost of cover

Age 25 – 39: £30 Monthly
Age 40 – 49: £40 Monthly
Age 50 – 54: £50 Monthly
Age 55 – 59: £70 Monthly

 

Who Can Buy Positive Life

This insurance is intended for individuals who have been diagnosed as HIV positive and:

  • Are aged between 25 - 59 
  • Have been diagnosed for a minimum 1 Year
  • Are free of any form of Hepatitis 
  • Commenced ART more than 6 months ago 
  • Have never registered a CD4 count below 200
  • Whose past 3 viral loads were all below detection threshold 
  • Who can provide clear evidence of regular follow up and good compliance with treatment
  • Have no related symptoms or other medical conditions

Everything you disclose about your HIV to any life insurer or life agent should be treated with sensitivity and appropriate levels of privacy.

 

Your Health 

Every person who suffers HIV knows that their condition and its complications will be in some way relatively unique to them. Other aspects of your overall health can impact your risk and the cover available. These will be explicitly considered when determining the fair premium, you would pay. 

Your Pulse underwriting specialist will look to gain a detailed picture of your condition and you should take care to disclose everything.

 

Requirements for more information

Occasionally our initial enquiry may not gather enough information to make a definitive decision, our insurers may ask for more in depth information regarding your HIV and/or any other conditions. Sometimes the details you can provide may allow them to reduce the premium they seek.

In cases where insurers seek a Medical Report from your doctor or consultant, Pulse will help you through this process and will explain your rights to see the report and challenge anything you believe to be inaccurate. You may find it helpful and reassuring to know your doctor has disclosed everything material.

Medical Reports

If you have any recent or relevant medical reports, these can enable underwriters to provide a more accurate indication. 
Please send these either to medical.reports@pulse-insurance.co.uk or post them to us
n.b. Do not worry if you don’t have any medical reports as they are not usually needed to give an indication of cover / cost.
It may be necessary anyway for separate specific medical reports to be sought if you decide to proceed with an application.
