Life Insurance with Lupus

Overview

Life Insurance is usually available for those with Lupus or SLE / Nephritis, but more severe cases can see mainstream insurers decline to offer Life Insurance cover.

It is known however that those suffering from Lupus are more prone to suffer from other “co-morbidities”. The risk is made worse by smoking, by the medication used to treat the condition and possibly by other factors that restrict lifestyle such as such as immobility.

The condition therefore can present increased risk to some Lupus sufferer's longevity. Life Insurance premiums are likely to be higher in such cases. But, each person’s case is different and needs due consideration by a life underwriter.

If you have not already been declined for life cover, you could consider approaching mainstream insurers first.

Pulse Insurance specialise and may well be able to find cover for those with Lupus and other conditions, when other insurers decline.

The following guidance is aimed at those who have been diagnosed with Lupus.

Key Issues for Lupus

The main aspects affecting the availability and cost of Life Insurance for those with Lupus are: -

  • Type of Lupus
  • Age when diagnosed
  • Severity of symptoms
  • Medication taken for Lupus
  • Use of mobility aids
  • What is affected e.g.
    • joint pain
    • just the skin, including: discoid lupus erythematosus or subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus
    • internal organs
  • Any other complications or other conditions e.g. Arthritis, Heart conditions or Strokes

It is quite likely that we will require a Medical Report before cover can be issued. We will discuss this with you when you enquire.

If you need a specialist underwriter

Pulse specialise in taking your Lupus and any other specific conditions and needs into account and finding you Life Insurance cover, if it is available.

We use our knowledge and experience to find a solution when other Life Insurers have declined to quote.

Conditions which may jointly occur with Lupus

There are some conditions where it is more common to also suffer other conditions at the same time than not. Equally, it is not always the case that these multiple conditions go hand in hand.

Some of the conditions that present along with Lupus may present little or not additional risk. In all cases, you have multiple conditions whether directly related or caused by your other condition, please ensure you tell us about all of them.

To complete multiple conditions, select your first condition and when that is complete, you will have the option to add more one at a time till you are ready.

Other Medical Conditions with Lupus

The following conditions are known to present alongside Lupus and we recommend you complete our specific questions for these, if you enquire:-

If you have any other health issues or conditions where we do not have specific question, please use the general question “have you any other health Issues?” at the end to provide details.

Mental health with Lupus

It is fact that coping with severe Lupus can be very challenging. For some people, managing life with Lupus can have an impact on their mental wellbeing on top of the physical impact of the condition. Others may have mental health issues that are unrelated to their medical conditions.

If you have been or are affected by and treated for mental health issues, this can impact your ability to find Life and other cover with mainstream insurers as much or more than your Lupus itself. Often insurers will postpone offering cover for several years or may even decline to cover you entirely.

Pulse Insurance are experienced in helping people find Life Insurance when they have previously suffered mental health issues alongside or as kind of consequence of their other medical condition(s).

It is not always possible to find cover where severe mental health issues are ongoing, but we like to think if cover is available, we can find it.

If Mental Health is relevant to your situation, you can complete details about your Lupus and then select to add or review details about this.

Why Pulse Insurance?

  • Pulse Insurance have been focused on finding unusual cover since 1998
  • We strive to offer caring and sensitive service
  • We are knowledgeable insurance professionals who work as a team
  • We provide a personal service to guide you through
  • If we cannot help, it will not be for the want of trying or know-how

While finding cover for everyone is not always possible and the premium will be higher to reflect increased risk, we like to think we are rather good at helping people find the cover they need.

In almost all Lupus cases we can offer indicative premiums and/or sense of if cover may be available or not early on; so, you can decide to proceed or not.

Being Transparent

It is always important to declare your Lupus and any other medical conditions completely.  Failure to be transparent with any insurer can result in a claim being denied – confounding the very reason for paying any premium in the first place.

Your Personal & Medical Details

Everything you disclose about your Lupus to any life insurer or life agent should be treated with sensitivity and appropriate levels of privacy.

Your Health

Every person with more severe Lupus knows that their state of health, any complications and their lifestyle will impact their risk and the cover available. These factors will be explicitly considered when determining the fair premium, you would pay.

Your Pulse underwriting specialist will look to gain a detailed picture of your condition and you should take care to disclose everything.

Requirements for more information

While our initial enquiry may not gather enough information to provide an indication of cost, our insurers may ask for more in depth information regarding your Lupus and/or any other conditions. Sometimes the details you can provide may allow them to reduce the premium they seek.

As you have a serious medical condition, it is likely that underwriters will need to seek a Doctor’s report or for you to undergo medical examinations, blood tests or other tests that will confirm your health to allow them to quote an accurate premium and confirm cover details. The costs involved in obtaining the medical information are usually paid by the underwriter, but if not, you will be informed before they are requested.

Pulse will never sell your details to anyone ever. We will use your details to provide the service you have asked for according to the permissions you grant us– read our Privacy and Data Protection policy in full.

Medical Reports

If you have any recent or relevant medical reports, these can enable underwriters to provide a more accurate indication.
Please send these either to medical.reports@pulse-insurance.co.uk or post them to us
n.b. Do not worry if you don’t have any medical reports as they are not usually needed to give an indication of cover / cost.
It may be necessary anyway for separate specific medical reports to be sought if you decide to proceed with an application.
If you have any queries, please give a member of the team a call on 01280 841430.
