Cystic Fibrosis

Life Insurance with Cystic Fibrosis

Life insurance with Cystic Fibrosis

The reality of having Cystic Fibrosis for most sufferers is that they need to find an insurer that will cover their condition and they also want to pay a fair premium.

Pulse specialise in finding Life Insurance for people who are refused cover on the standard market or are having difficulty in obtaining the cover they require due to a multiple of reasons and one being medical conditions, such as Cystic Fibrosis.

Key Aspects of Cystic Fibrosis

The availability of Life cover for anyone with Cystic Fibrosis is dependent on the severity of the condition.

Severity is measured by:

  • the organs affected
  • the frequency of symptoms
  • the impact on normal life activities
  • Age when diagnosed and time with the condition

Treatment of CF and obtaining cover:

There are some situations and treatments that will limit cover availability.

Insurers are unable to consider anyone awaiting a lung transplant for life insurance.

However, someone who has undergone a lung transplant may be offered terms when underwriters are happy that a sufficient period of time had elapsed post-surgery, for any potential for rejection to have passed.

The presence of additional respiratory conditions or complications, such as Bronchitis or Emphysema will result in difficulty in obtaining cover.

In addition, underwriters will unfortunately not offered cover to the following :-

  • Those who are treated with regular oxygen are unfortunately declined.
  • Anyone with marked respiratory deficiency or ‘cor pulmonale’ (failure of the right ventricle resulting from chronic disorder of the lung).

Our underwriters have commented that:
on the plus side, very many sufferers are offered terms, those with moderate symptoms, diagnosed young and able to carry out normal daily activities would attract a premium loading in the region of 2 – 2.5x above basic rates, often with a limited term.

Being Transparent

It is always important to declare your Cystic Fibrosis and any other medical conditions completely.

Your Personal & Medical Details

Everything you disclose about your Cystic Fibrosis to any life insurer or life agent should be treated with sensitivity and appropriate levels of privacy.

Your Cystic Fibrosis

Every person with Cystic Fibrosis knows that their condition, their triggers and their treatment needs will be in some way unique to them. The nature of medication and frequency of use and nature of any attacks varies from one person to the next. Other aspects of your lifestyle can impact your risk and the cover available.

These will be considered when determining the fair premium, you would pay.

Requirements for more information

Occasionally our initial enquiry may not gather enough information to make a definitive decision, our insurers may ask for more in depth information regarding your Cystic Fibrosis and/or any other conditions. Sometimes the details you can provide may allow them to reduce the premium they seek.

As you have a medical condition, it is possible that underwriters will need to seek a Doctor’s report or for you to undergo medical examinations, blood tests or other tests that will confirm your health to allow them to quote an accurate premium and confirm cover details. The costs involved in obtaining the medical information are usually paid by the underwriter, but if not, you will be informed before they are requested.

Pulse will never sell your details to anyone. We will use your details to provide the service you have asked for according to the permissions you grant us– read our Privacy and Data Protection policy in full.

Medical Reports

If you have any recent or relevant medical reports, these can enable underwriters to provide a more accurate indication.

Please send these either to [email protected] or post them to us

n.b. Do not worry if you don’t have any medical reports as they are not usually needed to give an indication of cover / cost.

It may be necessary anyway for separate specific medical reports to be sought if you decide to proceed with an application.
