The benefits of placing business with an MGA.

According to the Insurance Times, MGAs in the UK write approximately £5 billion of the £47 billion UK general insurance market. Managing General Agents are a key part of the UK insurance ecosystem and offer some significant advantages versus dealing directly with insurance companies.

MGAs tend to focus on the SME market and offer levels of service and flexibility that smaller brokers just would not be able to access going directly to an insurer or the Lloyd’s market. Lower minimum premiums; faster turnarounds; flexibility on rates and bespoke policy wordings are all significant advantages provided by MGAs. Being able to quote and bind quickly is also a massive benefit of dealing with an MGA. We have frequently bound cover out of office hours for emergency trips abroad being undertaken by clients.

What is an MGA?

A Managing General Agent is an insurance agency that provides underwriting services on behalf of an insurer or syndicate. This includes rating; document issuance and in some cases claims handling, too. For the insurer, the benefit is that the MGA will handle the administration of the policy and the insurer solely provides the financial backing for any claims. This allows insurers to enter markets where their minimum premiums of £5k plus would be prohibitive.

Pulse

Pulse started over twenty years ago as an impaired life underwriting agency. Since 2017 we have expanded to include Personal Accident; Business Travel; Kidnap and Ransom; Leisure Travel and Sports Coaching facilities with various insurers and syndicates on both a wholesale and retail basis. Having this level of experience as a Lloyd’s coverholder means that Pulse has been able to obtain underwriting authority for these varied and complimentary classes of business.

Where a risk might not fit with our existing facilities, we have access to Lloyd’s wider market to place even the most challenging or unusual of risks on an open market basis.

We are also a member of the MGAA (Managing General Agents Association) who are the industry body representing MGAs, working to grow the sector. They also give its members a voice in government legislation pertaining to insurance placements.

Our Specialty underwriting team has a combined 75 years of experience in Personal Accident, Travel and Kidnap and Ransom risks.
