An Update on Unoccupied Property Insurance

We’ve had a number of enquiries since the beginning of lockdown and as we now have an extension of a further three weeks we thought it would be a good time to update you on our Unoccupied Home Insurance.

Underwriters have relaxed a few points during this difficult period but please note that their usual expectations will return once Government guidelines begin to normalise.

30-day inspections due to Government guidelines relating to COVID-19?

Whilst underwriters would expect their customers to adhere to the terms and conditions of the policy we understand that this may not always be possible given the current situation with COVID-19.

What if a property is now unoccupied due to the customer and/or the tenant being unwell or has travelled home due to Government guidelines relating to COVID-19?

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK many organisations are implementing contingency plans such as home-working. This means many people have travelled home to be with family leaving their usual worktime dwellings empty. Most insurers are pragmatic over this, but it is important to review the policy requirements in such situations.

Should you feel that you are not able to comply with the terms and conditions set out in the policy relating to unoccupancy we ask that you contact us to discuss this further. Underwriters will be taking a pragmatic approach to these situations but in the event of a claim, each incident will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

It may be necessary to search for the correct coverage if your property is left unoccupied for a prolonged period.

Please feel free to contact us with any queries you may have on [email protected]

Our very best wishes go to you and your families during this difficult time.
